SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION: FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!

Calling all young men! Both US Citizen and most non-US citizen men living in the US ages 18 – 25 are required to register with the Selective Service. This includes even those living in the US illegally (either as an overstay or those who came without papers). According to law, a man must register with Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday. Failure to do so may impact their ability to obtain US Citizenship, certain government benefits including federal student aid, and in some cases even a job.

Foreign nationals not required to register are those in the U.S. on student or visitor visas, and those who are part of a diplomatic or trade mission with their families. While notice of this requirement is usually given in our high schools, it does not exempt those who did not attend high school in the US from registering. Selective Service will accept late registrations but not after a man has reached age 26. Registration can be done online at www.sss.gov.
